Managing Eczema: The Brick Wall & Emollients

Key Information

  • The Foundation of Care: Using emollients (medical moisturisers) is the most important part of managing eczema.
  • The “Brick Wall” Analogy:
    • Healthy Skin: A strong brick wall where cells are bricks and the “mortar” locks moisture in and keeps irritants out.
    • Eczema Skin: There isn’t enough mortar, creating a “leaky” barrier that lets moisture out and irritants in.
    • The Solution: Emollients act as the missing mortar, repairing the barrier and protecting the skin.

The 3 Golden Rules of Application

  • Be Frequent & Generous:
    • Apply at least twice daily, every day, from head to toe.
    • Continue even when skin is clear to prevent flare-ups.
    • Apply straight after bathing or swimming.
  • Smooth, Don’t Rub:
    • Gently smooth in the direction of hair growth.
    • Avoid rubbing, as it creates heat and can worsen itching.
  • Avoid Soap:
    • Standard soaps and shower gels strip natural oils.
    • Use an emollient or soap substitute instead.

Finding the Right Emollient

The best emollient is simply the one you are happy to use consistently.

  • Lotions: Light and suitable for hairy areas.
  • Creams: A good all-round option.
  • Ointments: Greasier and ideal for very dry skin or overnight use.

Tip: When trying a new product, test it on a small patch of skin first.

What Happens Next?

Using emollients correctly is the best way to prevent eczema flare-ups.
