Hormone Replacement Therapy Guide
Key Information
- What HRT Does: Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) works by replacing oestrogen, which your body produces less of during menopause.
- Different Forms: HRT can come as tablets, skin patches, gels, or other forms.
- Symptom Relief: HRT is the most effective treatment for many disruptive menopause symptoms, including hot flushes, night sweats, sleep problems, mood swings, and vaginal dryness.
- Bone Protection: A major long-term benefit is that HRT helps protect your bones, reducing the risk of osteoporosis.
- Personal Decision: Deciding whether HRT is right for you is a personal choice made with a GP, based on your symptoms and medical history.

To help you get the most out of the conversation, it can be useful to keep a simple diary of your symptoms and note any questions you have.
During your appointment, we will discuss the benefits and risks for you personally and decide together on the best course of action.
If we agree to start HRT, you will usually begin on a low dose, and we will arrange a follow-up appointment after about three months to check how you are getting on.
Is HRT Suitable for Everyone?
For most women, HRT is a safe and effective option.
However, it may not be suitable if you have a history of certain types of cancer or blood clots.
We also need to make sure your blood pressure is well controlled before you start. It is important to discuss your individual circumstances with a clinician.
