Finding the Right HRT For You

Key Information

  • Which Hormones? If you still have your womb, you will need combined HRT, which contains both oestrogen and progesterone. If you have had your womb removed, you will usually only need oestrogen-only HRT.
  • Which Method? HRT can be taken through the skin using patches, gels, or sprays. These are usually the safest methods. HRT tablets are also an option, but carry a small increased risk of blood clots.
  • Local Symptoms: For vaginal dryness only, localised oestrogen treatments such as creams or pessaries may be used.
  • Which Routine? If you are still having some periods, cyclical HRT is usually suggested and may cause a regular monthly bleed. If your periods stopped over a year ago, we usually aim for a continuous no-bleed routine.
