Understanding Your Iron Result
Key Information
- Your Results: Your recent blood test shows your iron level is lower than we would like.
- The Goal: This page explains what low iron means, how it may be affecting you, and how we plan to correct it.
What is Iron Deficiency?
Think of iron as a key ingredient your body uses to make haemoglobin.
- The Role of Haemoglobin: This protein in red blood cells carries oxygen from your lungs to the rest of your body.
- The Problem: Low iron means your body cannot make enough haemoglobin, so oxygen delivery is reduced.
- The Symptoms: This often leads to tiredness, breathlessness, and feeling generally run down.
Your Treatment Plan
Our aim is to restore your iron levels so your body can function normally.
1. Your Prescription
- The Medication: We have sent a prescription for iron tablets to your nominated pharmacy.
- Duration: You will usually need to take these for at least 3 months.
- Why So Long? This ensures both your current levels and your long-term iron stores are replenished.
2. Top Tip for Absorption
Take your iron tablet with a source of Vitamin C (such as a small glass of orange juice) to improve absorption.
Managing Side Effects
Side effects are common, particularly when you first start treatment.
- Common Issues: Constipation, upset stomach, or nausea.
- Dark Poo (Do Not Panic): Your stools may become very dark or black. This is normal and expected.
How to Reduce Stomach Upset:
- Take the tablets with or shortly after food.
- Try taking them every other day if needed.
What Happens Next?
It is important to continue the treatment if possible, as this is the most effective way to restore your iron levels.
If side effects become difficult to manage, or if you have any concerns, please contact us.
