What is an Urgent Treatment Centre?

Key Information

  • What It Is: An Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC) is for urgent medical problems that are not life-threatening, sitting between your GP practice and A&E.
  • What They Treat: UTCs can help with many minor injuries and illnesses, such as sprains, suspected broken bones, minor head injuries, cuts, and burns.
  • Best Route: Contact NHS 111 first online or by phone. They can assess you and book a timed UTC appointment if needed.
  • Who Runs Them: UTCs are run by experienced GPs and nurses, and many have X-ray facilities on-site.

What Happens Next?

Your local UTC is the best place for urgent minor injuries and illnesses that are not life-threatening.

While you can walk in, we strongly recommend contacting NHS 111 first. They can assess your symptoms and book you a timed appointment at the UTC if it is the right place for you.

You can also find your nearest UTC by searching on the NHS website or by following the “Urgent Care” link on our practice website.

For Life-Threatening Emergencies

For life-threatening emergencies, such as severe chest pain or symptoms of a stroke, you must still go to A&E or call 999.
