Understanding Sick Notes (Fit Notes)
Key Information
- Building a Picture: If you are worried about a cough, it is natural to feel anxious about the appointment. Think of the consultation as us building a picture together.
- Your Story Matters: You hold the most important information, and we help put the pieces together.
- The Goal: To understand the story of your cough through a straightforward process of listening and checking.
Step 1: The Conversation
The first and most important thing we do is listen. To understand your situation, we may ask:
- Duration: How long have you had the cough?
- Phlegm: Are you coughing anything up? If so, what does it look like?
- Other Symptoms: Do you have a fever, chest pain, or wheezing?
- History: Do you smoke?
Step 2: The Physical Check
Next, we carry out a simple, painless check-up to add more detail to the picture.
This may include:
- Checking your temperature, pulse, and breathing rate.
- Listening to your chest with a stethoscope to check for signs of infection.
Step 3: The Outcome
Once we have built the picture, we will explain the likely cause.
- Reassurance: For many people, the cough is due to a viral infection that will clear on its own.
- The Plan: If treatment or further investigation is needed, we will agree the next steps together.
