Understanding Sick Notes (Fit Notes)
Key Information
- The Common Culprit: Most short-term coughs are caused by viral infections such as colds or flu. The cough is your body’s way of clearing mucus and inflammation.
- Persistent Coughs: If a cough lasts longer, we consider other causes such as asthma, acid reflux, or postnasal drip.
- COPD: In people who smoke or have smoked, a persistent cough can be a sign of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).
- Bacterial vs. Viral: Most coughs are viral and settle on their own, but bacterial infections such as pneumonia are more serious and may need antibiotics.
